Lodge Safari

Day 1: Rhodes Village, Eastern Cape, South Africa

You arrive in Rhodes Village, the gateway to the Southern Drakensberg Mountain Range, where your guides will meet you at the Rhodes Hotel. Your accommodation for your South Africa fly fishing trip is in a spacious double room, a good place to relax and revitalize yourself after the long journey. You meet at 18:30pm for a welcome drink in the Rhodes Hotel bar and a brief overview of your trip before tucking in to a delicious dinner at the Rubicon Restaurant.

Day 2: Rhodes Village, Eastern Cape, South Africa

After a leisurely breakfast, anglers will get their first taste of fly fishing as they cast their rods during an orientation by expert fly-fishing guides. This half day orientation will be followed by an excursion to the upper Bell River for some small stream fishing for wild Brown and Rainbow Trout, weather permitting. A delicious on stream lunch will be served daily for anglers.

For non anglers, your day starts with an exploration of the Rhodes Village, a remote little village situated along the South Africa/Lesotho border. This village is known for its beautiful traditional handcrafted work and indigenous art. The road and trails in and around the village offer a chance to stretch your legs and enjoy the crisp mountain air.

As the sun sets over the village, you sit down for aperitifs on the terrace of the Hotel, followed by a traditional South Africa dinner prepared by the Hotel chef.

Day 3: Rhodes Village, Eastern Cape, South Africa

On day 3 of your South Africa fly fishing trip, anglers depart at 09:00am for a full day of fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout on the Bokspruit and Skerkspruit Rivers. Depending on the weather/flow conditions, the Kloppershoek and Bell Rivers will also be used. These rivers are home to some indigenous Yellowfish of the smallmouth and largemouth variety.

Non anglers will have the option of clay pigeon shooting, mountain bike riding or horseback riding in and around the village, or even just relax at the Hotel, taking in the wonderful sights and sounds of your surroundings. Dinner tonight will be at the famous Walkerbouts Inn.

Day 4: Rhodes Village, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Today anglers enjoy another full day of fly-fishing, this time for trophy Stillwater Trout on the amazing Birkhall Dam, or the trophy dam/lake situated near the Tiffendell Ski Resort. The Tiffendell Ski Resort is South Africa's only ski resort and is located 9000 feet above sea level. These dams and lakes are home to some giant fish, some often more than 2.3 kilograms (5 pounds).

Non anglers enjoy a trip up to the summit of Naude's Nek Pass (10 000 feet above sea level). Here you will enjoy spectacular views of the rolling hills and grass plains of the Eastern Cape interior, as well as the mountains of Lesotho. Your trip is followed by a cold lunch and drinks served at the summit.

This evening you gather for an aperitif on the outdoor terrace, before enjoying a dinner prepared by the chef from the Rhodes Hotel.

Day 5: Lesotho

Today another full day of guiding is planned. Depending on the weather conditions while fly fishing in Lesotho, the guiding will include a visit to the freestone streams of Southern Lesotho in search for Brown and Rainbow Trout. The gorges and steep mountains makes the terrain rugged, and the streams are hardly ever fished, making this experience adventure fly fishing at its best.

For non fishers, you spend the day climbing the Rhodes Mountain, accompanied by a guide carrying the refreshments and lunch. Lunch will be served on the summit of the mountain, overlooking the beauty of the valley and village below.

Tonight you will enjoy an a la carte dinner served at the Rubicon Restaurant.
